I am proud to announce that the House has passed a budget that includes the expansion of Medicaid, which would provide 300,000 more Virginians with healthcare. This was one of my main promises during our campaign, and I am happy to say that we have delivered it in the House of Delegates. The endorsed Medicaid expansion budget amendment was a bipartisan effort to protect some of our most vulnerable people.

The tragedy our nation faced on Wednesday with the slaying 17 innocent souls in Parkland County, Flordia is heartbreaking. No child should have to live in fear for their life, especially at school. Our children should be provided a space where they are nurtured, loved, and taught how to critically think and grow. Unfortunately, at this time, this is not a reality for many children in our nation.
I have been a proponent for bipartisanship in the Virginia Legislature and have worked with the other side of the aisle to ensure that we are passing policy that is focused on progressing the Commonwealth, not our personal political parties. In the wake of this tragedy, we need to focus on solutions rather than retreating to our corners and blaming the other side. We need to come to the table in search for a solution which will address the epidemic of violence in our nation.

We are already halfway through the 2018 General Assembly Session, meaning that by next week all bills which have passed out of the House of Delegates will be on their way to the Senate. I am happy to announce that my first bill will be heard by the Senate on Monday and am hopeful that there are more to come. As the House begins to hear the Senate bills, our Chamber will have to make sure that the health of the Commonwealth is the main focus and that we are casting votes that keep the wellbeing our citizens at heart.
With crossover just around the corner, I was happy to go back home this weekend to be with my family and attend the Chinese New Year Festival in Falls Church. It was great to see some of you there, as well as some of my other House of Delegate Colleagues...

Having worked with children in the foster care system, I have seen first hand the impact that displacement has on a child. The act of removing a child from their home can be traumatic and can affect the mental well-being of the child. When finding a placement for a child, advocates and the courts try to identify family members who can take them in. Far too often, these family members are grandparents or other relatives who are not financially secure enough to take on the costs associated with supporting a child and they are then directed to the foster care system.
The need for kinship guardianship assistance has brought about bipartisan attention. I am proud to work with Delegate Emily Brewer and am chief co-patron on her bill, House Bill 1333, which would provide the same financial assistance given to foster parents to those providing kinship care. You can read an article covering the importance of Delegate Brewer's and my bills on the Kinship Guardianship Assistance Program by clicking here.
This bill has the potential to change the long-term health of many children in the Commonwealth and will contribute to the stability of hundreds of children's lives. I look forward to working with my colleague from across the aisle as we advocate to secure funding for kinship guardianship.

During my campaign, I knocked on thousands of doors and heard from many of you about the importance of investing in early childhood education. Ensuring the success of our children is something that I, and many of you, am continually advocating for. This is why I have introduced House Bill 109, which will ask the three remaining Virginia localities without full-day kindergarten for all students to develop a plan to fund and phase-in a full-day kindergarten program for each student in their school division.
We know the positive impact early childhood education has on our youth and how early intervention yields great results for students as they progress in school. The fact that some of our youth are starting on a different playing field than others simply due to not being provided the opportunity to attend full-day kindergarten is something we all should advocate to end.
I am hopeful that my legislation, House Bil 109, will encourage the three reaming localities to prioritize education and form a practical and timely plan to provide all students with all-day kindergarten. As I advocate for this cause in the House of Delegates, I ask that you also advocate for this bill by spreading the word or contacting other elected officials.

I am happy to announce that I am championing a piece of legislation, HB1419, which would increase elementary student's access to recess- an evidence-based approach to enhancing academic performance in the classroom.
